Eight and a half feet of bronze on the lakefront, and everything else follows from it. Henry Moore's Man Enters the Cosmos stands outside the Adler Planetarium as a working sundial, and at that scale the four rocky planets never leave Solidarity Drive — the causeway of Polish monuments running between the Adler and the Shedd. Mercury to Mars is under an hour on foot, past Copernicus, Havlíček and Kosciuszko, and all four fit inside a quarter mile. Then the gap opens. Jupiter is a mile north at Buckingham Fountain, still comfortably on foot — and after that the distances stop being walkable. Pick up a Divvy at DuSable Harbor and ride the Lakefront Trail: Saturn at Navy Pier, Uranus in Lincoln Park, and Neptune more than five miles from where you started. Six stops on foot, three by bike, and the emptiness between them is the honest part.
The Sun

☉ Man Enters the Cosmos, Adler Planetarium
Henry Moore's bronze bowstring sundial on the lakefront plaza outside the Adler Planetarium — 8.5 feet across, and every other number on this walk is derived from it. At 1 : 537 million, the whole inner solar system fits on Solidarity Drive and Neptune lands five miles north.
