The Sun

☉ The Unisphere, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park

The 120-foot stainless steel globe erected for the 1964 World's Fair — the largest representation of Earth ever built. At this scale (1 : 38 million), the inner planets are a walk through Queens, but Neptune is 118 km away in the Catskill Mountains. The outer planets are a multi-day journey by design: the Unisphere's true scale makes the immensity of the solar system impossible to ignore.

Diameter 36.576 m — the anchor that sets the scale for the whole system.
